History & Honours

Hong Kong Squadron is a registered sports and social club registered under the Hong Kong Societies Ordinance. Its members primarily play football, the majority in the Yau Yee Football League, recognised as Hong Kong’s premier amateur football league as well as in the Hong Kong Legal League. The Hong Kong Squadron football club was one of the founder members of the Yau Yee Football League in 1977 under the name of HMS Tamar and was predominantly formed from members of the Royal Navy Patrol boat Squadron and 3rd Raiding Squadron Royal Marines. As the years passed more and more British forces players were involved. The Navy moved to Stonecutters Island and Tamar was a mix of Navy, Army and RAF.

Through most of the l990’s the club was based at the British Medical Hospital in Kowloon (King’s Park) with the facilities being maintained by the forces. As the repatriation of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China neared the players available from the forces reduced significantly and the team was forced to introduce civilian players. Following the handover in 1997 only two ex forces players remained in the team and the facilities at BMH were rescinded to the government.

HK Squadron continued to flourish with civilians however and became well known in the Asia footballing community, regularly participating in overseas football tournaments in Bangkok, Manila and Shanghai.

HK Squadron remain ever present in the first division of the Yau Yee Football League and in 2004 sought society status with a view to expanding the membership of the club. A merger was announced with existing YYL team Kai Tak Hearts thus incorporating a second team in the league. The same year also saw the Hong Kong Squadron Club agree a sponsorship deal with The Hong Kong Delivery Company (HKDC) and the two football teams were renamed HKDC Squadron and HKDC Hearts.

Further membership expansion has seen the addition of the well known Legal League and touring team Athletico De Wanchai incorporated into the club in 1996 and the addition of GAC logistics as sponsors. ADW are run as a VETS/COLTS team with players in the over 35/ under 17 age groups to provide an opportunity for youngsters and oldsters alike to participate in club football.

The club bases itself at the premises of its further sponsors “Mes Amis group” in Wanchai utilising Amici Restaurant as the ‘clubhouse’. The club continues to grow its membership and the activities and opportunities afforded to its members.
