Shekou 8s 2007

Shekou 8s 2007
Squad: Kalle, Simmons, Scrapper, Brads, Thommo, Trampo, Nick O, Dave-o, Gav, Jan and Slatts with last minute standins Matt ‘n Justin

Apologies: Grimmy (weekend in the London Park Lane with Sheihk Mahandi), Gethin – similar excuse but in the desert. Where would you rather be?

The annual Hearts pre-season training trip (you won’t find them at the midweek training!) to Shenzhen took place over a hot sweaty Saturday.

Hearts started off well with a full squad of 11 at the TST ferry terminal, more than the usual appearance on a Sunday, but with a few in a similar vegetative state (or another planet). With no injuries on the ferry trip, tactics were discussed and the route to the final planned out. First master stroke by the manager Oates, to take himself off to play for one-man Corinthians!

First game against Boca started lively enough, despite the heavy undergrowth on the pitch, with Hearts taking the early lead through Trampo, only to be cancelled out shortly after by a lucky lob by Tunners which cam e off the back of the keepers … back? The game seemed to go on for more than 20 mins, but it was long enough for Hearts to find the winner with a few minutes left on the clock with a great individual goal by Jan for the winner.

Second game against the Swiss not quite so impressive, Hearts dominated the game but failed to take all the chances and scrapped by with a 2:0 win. Next up was Spartans who were dispatched with relative ease 1:0 despite the scoreline. A few missed chances and roundings of the keeper the very long way round – Gav!

With stomachs full of burgers after the break, it was enough to slow Hearts to be contained by Mes Amis 1:1. With all eyes now on rivals Elephant and Castle and the rules having been consulted with regard to the extra point for three goals, Hearts finally got the scoring touch against the hapless youngters from GZ AISG. The poor keeper was black and blue after the target practice Jan, Gav, Slatts and Trampo and they were lucky to keep the score to 7:0!

Showdown then for the top of the table clash opportunity against Mobsters was next against Elephant and Castle. Not having conceded a goal all day (though only having scored 10 compared to Hearts 13, it was always going to be difficult to score, especially back on the jungle at pitch 3. Despite playing the more attacking footy, Hearts could not find the final finishing touch past the E&C defense and the game finished scoreless. Hearts therefore progressed to the 3/4 th place playoff against Inter Shenzhen and finished their unbeaten run for the competition in style with a 2:0 victory.

Mobsters versus E&C was played out to a 0-0 draw which Mobsters keeper Slaymaker won for them on penalties.

On the day Hearts were of course the winners, snatching two trophies for the day, having won the 2nd runners up trophy and the team of the tournament trophy largely thanks to Jan's gentlemanly, respectful understanding of the young lady referees decisions!

Moments for the match were too numerous to mention, rounding the keeper Gav, Dave the keeper for the Boca goal, Slatts cos he just scored too many goals (5 on the day?). Final mention must go to the stamina of the team during the evenings exploits, and the team spirit (vodka mostly) demonstrated. Brads falling asleep in the hotel room after getting off the bus was related to the liquid refreshment provided rather than the usual shower oblutions that have been come to be part of the Hearts folklore to rival Nosey Mitchell’s vast array of shower cosmetic applications. Good luck in Abu Dhabi Brads!

Scrapper Wilson upheld the honour of the club against all comers and demonstrated his extreme negotiating skills when discussing the bar tab (should make that into an Olympic Sport) before making a break for freedom. Hope the dental / facial reconstruction bill wasn’t too bad!

See you all next year for a quiet weekend away!!
